The gender of nouns can be
- masculine (maskil)
- feminine (femminil)

Feminine nouns (in generall) end with an "a" while masculine end with a consonant or with a vowel "i" or "u".

feminine:

mara (woman)
mejda (table)

 masculine:

granċi (crab)

However, there are exeptions to this rule: in many cases, we convert a noun from masculine to feminine by adding the vowel "a" at the end:

maskuline     ->     feminine
                                                   avukat        ->      avukata

                                                    qattus        ->       qattusa
                                għalliem        ->      għalliem
Sometimes, the word is changed completely:

                               maskuline       ->      feminine
                                   raġel             ->          mara
